Mt. Carmel Baptist Church was founded in 1896 by the late Rev. H.P. Sauption, Mrs. Jennie E. Lang, Mrs. Mary Jones, Mrs. Frances Robinson, and Mrs. Susie Gordon.
The Naming
Prior to the naming of the church, members held services in the Rising Sun Mason Hall, Johnson Chapel Hall and in the home of Mrs. Susie Gordon. The organizing of the church was held in St. Paul C. M. E. Church on Seminary Street, now Northwest Fifth Ave. During the organizational meeting, Rev. Sauption suggested the name of the church, “Mt. Carmel”. The name was accepted, thus we became Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
